TOKYO, Japan — A total of 172 elite table tennis athletes earned their spots to compete at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. This historical sports event brought together 86 men and 86 women from across the globe.

The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) used a strict qualification system. It ensured that only the world’s absolute finest players made it to the tables. The global race forced players to endure intense regional matches and high-stakes world tournaments to secure an official invitation.

The ITTF enforced strict limits on how many players each country could bring to Japan. This kept the competition fair. It also gave smaller nations a real chance to shine on the world stage.

• Maximum of six athletes per country.
• Three men and three women per nation.
• Two players in each singles event.
• One team per gender.
• One pair in mixed doubles.

As the host nation, Japan bypassed the usual stress of regional qualifying tournaments. They automatically received a full six-player quota to defend their home turf.

The team events served as a primary foundation for the singles roster. In total, 16 teams per gender booked their tickets to Tokyo.

Six of these spots were claimed through continental qualification tournaments. One team from each major region secured a position. These regions included Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America, and Oceania.

The stakes were raised immensely at the ITTF World Team Qualification Tournament. At this single event, nine more team spots were up for grabs. The final sixteenth spot was reserved for the host nation, Japan.

The singles categories featured between 64 and 70 players per gender. The qualification system heavily favored successful teams by giving them an automatic entry into the singles tournament.

Every country that qualified a three-player team was allowed to automatically enter two of those players into the singles draws. This filled a very significant portion of the singles brackets right away.

The remaining vinci tennis singles spots were handed out through individual continental qualification games. A final World Singles Qualification Event was also held. Players who still had not qualified could rely on the official ITTF World Rankings to secure the last few open positions.

The Tokyo Games marked a thrilling milestone with the debut of mixed doubles. This fresh event allowed only 16 highly competitive pairs to enter the stadium.

Six spots were granted to winners of regional continental trials. Four spaces went to the top pairs at the 2019 World Tour Grand Finals. Another five pairs earned their invitations through the 2020 World Tour. Japan completed the short list as the host nation.

This new addition brought intense drama to the sport. Countries had to carefully select pairs that could outlast the competition on the world stage.
